We have an Orchestra study coming up and I came up with a very cool sounding "horn". You may have all the supplies you need around the house or if you are buying supplies for a large group I estimate the cost to be about 35 cents per horn.
I have also designed this so kids can assemble themselves with minor adult help.
I will try to post more detailed step by step pics ASAP but for now here are the steps in writing:
1. Cut the top part off a water bottle.
2. tape it to a paper towel tube (use duct tape or packing tape) - cover the tube with paper before if you want it to look "pretty"
3. cut a hole in a 9 oz paper cup and a 9 oz plastic cup for the other end of the tube to go through
4. put the tube in the paper cup the put the plastic cup under it
5. tape the paper cup to the paper towel tube.
6. tape the paper cup to a 7 inch plastic plate - just use 3 pieces of tape to secure it but do not completely seal it all the way around
7. if you want you can stop now and blow into your horn by putting both lips in the mouth piece and saying something like "do do do doooo or da da da daaa" and you should hear a cool trumpet like sound. If not make sure your plastic cup is "free" to rattle against the plate
8. I didn't like the look of the tape but wasn't sure how to make it easy for kids to put together so thats when I decided to wrap the tube in white paper and put a 6 inch stryrofoam bowl over the tube along with a 16 oz styrofoam cup.
I hope this makes sense.
I realize its a pretty heavy use of consumable products although at least the water bottle and paper tube are being upcycled. I plan on doing another version with leftover party cups and plates which makes me think this would also be a fun party craft.
See Pinterest board for added handle made from plastic plate rim!
